Sponge activity: I will have the class do the routine warm ups and stretches that we do in my service learning. Then I'm going to explain what kind of stretches and warm ups they are and their main purpose.
Introduction: What is most important in becoming a successful basketball coach? A successful basketball coach is somebody that wins games and not only that, he or she is somebody that is respected and trusted by his/her team. A successful coach shows a disciplined and well trained team that is ready to give out a hundred percent of their effort on the court. Most important means what is the one thing a coach needs to do or have in order to be successful. I chose this topic because basketball has always fascinated me and I want to show a different view of basketball instead of just the playing part of it. My plan is to show them and tell them the process I went through for this senior project. Explain my answers one by one and do activities that will explain and show just how important my answers are.
Foundation: I'm going to talk about the different things I had to go through to coach basketball and talk about how its a rewarding thing to do even if you're only doing it for fun. I might talk about a little bit of the history of basketball also because I want to mention how coaching came in because as time progressed, the game became technical and more strategized.
Answer 1: Disciplined Players
Activity: I will call a group huddle and I will expect at least one them to walk and take their time and when they do, I will have them all run and perform conditioning drills. I will explain that I'm not doing it to punish but to discipline because as a coach, I have to have everybody's attention and I need them to be able to do the task I tell them to do because in a game situation, they're going to need to trust my tactics and be disciplined to perform a hundred percent effort in order to win the game.
Answer 2: Countering with the right play
Activity: I'm not sure with this but I want them to perform defensive and offensive plays. For example, run a 3 on 3 and have them do a man to man defense and explain what they should do. As for offensive plays, I want them to do curls going to the basket.
Answer 3: Scouting
Activity: I will have them look at a scenario and ask them what kind of defense they should do in order to stop the other team's offense. Then I will explain the reason why it is the right defense to call.
Conclusion
Best Answer: Disciplined Players is my best answer because first of all, all my other answers would not have been there without it. I need players that are disciplined enough to follow through with the play I told them to run and scouting the other team and learning about their weakness would be useless if my team can't listen and trust me on how we can stop them. Disciplined players unifies a team and that's what basketball's all about. A team can't be successful if they're not playing as a whole. With discipline, players will learn how to trust and respect their coach and make their game better as a player.
3 Important Sources:
1. Service Learning- Coach Valentine- She taught me a lot over the past few months. I learned a lot from her interviews and observing her on the court. I basically follow everything from what I have seen from her.
2. Coaching Youth Basketball by Kristen Somogyi- This book give a detailed explanation on what I have to do in if I plan to coach basketball.
3. Let's Talk Defense-Herb Brown- This book talked about the important personalities I have to look for in order to be successful. It showed me all kinds of things such as plays and what to look for in a player.
Product: Before, I can't stand teaching kids and even my sister, but when I went through this experience, I learned to be patient and have the heart to help and teach kids and most importantly about basketball. As a product, I have been offered by Mr. Cammon the head coach and P.E. teacher of Fremont Academy to coach his team along with his assistant coach Valentine. This is my product because I am actually going to consider this offer and I love being part of the team and I want to be a part of watching and helping this team grow.
