Senior Project Reflection

PART I: Two-Hour Presentation
(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment

P

Why?
I met all the requirements. I know I didn't do an outstanding job but I know I did pretty decent and I showed content and understanding.
(2) What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
I'm just proud that I finished and met the time requirements. I'm proud that I got to present on something I love.

PART II: Overall Senior Project Experience

(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.
I think the way I concluded and showed my product went well. I also had a lot of content in my answers and that I had no problems in meeting my time requirements. I could have done my second activity more engaging and told my class to sit closer to each other and closer to me so I'd have their full attention.

(4) What is your EQ and what is the best answer to your EQ?
What is most important in becoming a successful basketball coach? My best answer is Disciplined Players.

(5) How has the last month of culminating events (e.g I-Search, Two-Hour, Exit etc) affected your answer to your EQ? Has it changed? Why or why not?
Yes it has changed my first answer. My answer before was gaining respect but because of the advisory meetings it changed into disciplined players. It changed because the events caused me to see that my answer before was very broad and common sense and that I needed an answer that will have respect as part of it but will also include a lot of things to it and is actually something that is well thought of.

(6) What suggestions do you have in order to improve the senior project?
maybe less research but more hours on the service learning and independent task because that's where I feel like you learn the most about the project.

(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment
AP+/P-

Why?
I feel like I deserve this grade because I know I turned in two late interviews and didn't have a whole bunch of sources. I'm leading more to AP+ because I still worked really hard on my senior project and dedicated a lot of time to learn more about it and turned most things in on time. But a P- would do too:)

Service Learning

Literal

Fremont Academy- started January 8 Saturday 12-2pm, no practice on Sundays, Mon-Fri 3 pm-5 pm then Saturday-12-2 pm (games started at 2/15 Tuesday, games are always on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-5 pm) practices are  now Mon, Wed, Fri, 3-5 pm and Sat. 12-2 pm. Season ended March 3rd. Total of 90 hours..if including the games: total of 102 hours

I did everything the coaches wanted me to do. I helped the coaches run drills and plays. Cleaned floors. Watch over the team. Observed what the coaches did. Helped  the kids with dribbling, shooting, passing, boxing out, rebounding.

Interpretive
The most important thing I learned from my service learning would have to be the knowledge in drills and plays. It's the most important thing I learned because when I first started out, I only had a very few knowledge of these things and now, I know more and its important because I have found out that in being a coach, a life long learning of the game is needed in order to be successful.

Applied
What I did helped me answer my EQ because as I helped train and coach these kids, from when I first saw them as kids that just wanted to play and really just knew how to dribble and shoot but through discipline and hard work, I saw them improve dramatically in everything. Till now, they still lose but compared to before, they actually have a chance of winning a game now and to me, that's success.

Lesson Plan Questions

Sponge activity: I will have the class do the routine warm ups and stretches that we do in my service learning. Then I'm going to explain what kind of stretches and warm ups they are and their main purpose.

Introduction: What is most important in becoming a successful basketball coach? A successful basketball coach is somebody that wins games and not only that, he or she is somebody that is respected and trusted by his/her team. A successful coach shows a disciplined and well trained team that is ready to give out a hundred percent of their effort on the court. Most important means what is the one thing a coach needs to do or have in order to be successful. I chose this topic because basketball has always fascinated me and I want to show a different view of basketball instead of just the playing part of it. My plan is to show them and tell them the process I went through for this senior project. Explain my answers one by one and do activities that will explain and show just how important my answers are.

Foundation: I'm going to talk about the different things I had to go through to coach basketball and talk about how its a rewarding thing to do even if you're only doing it for fun. I might talk about a little bit of the history of basketball also because I want to mention how coaching came in because as time progressed, the game became technical and more strategized.

Answer 1: Disciplined Players
Activity: I will call a group huddle and I will expect at least one them to walk and take their time and when they do, I will have them all run and perform conditioning drills. I will explain that I'm not doing it to punish but to discipline because as a coach, I have to have everybody's attention and I need them to be able to do the task I tell them to do because in a game situation, they're going to need to trust my tactics and be disciplined to perform a hundred percent effort  in order to win the game.

Answer 2: Countering with the right play
Activity: I'm not sure with this but I want them to perform defensive and offensive plays. For example, run a 3 on 3 and have them do a man to man defense and explain what they should do. As for offensive plays, I want them to do curls going to the basket.

Answer 3: Scouting
Activity: I will have them look at a scenario and ask them what kind of defense they should do in order to stop the other team's offense. Then I will explain the reason why it is the right defense to call.

Conclusion
Best Answer: Disciplined Players is my best answer because first of all, all my other answers would not have been there without it. I need players that are disciplined enough to follow through with the play I told them to run and scouting the other team and learning about their weakness would be useless if my team can't listen and trust me on how we can stop them. Disciplined players unifies a team and that's what basketball's all about. A team can't be successful if they're not playing as a whole. With discipline, players will learn how to trust and respect their coach and make their game better as a player.

3 Important Sources:
1. Service Learning- Coach Valentine- She taught me a lot over the past few months. I learned a lot from her interviews and observing her on the court. I basically follow everything from what I have seen from her.
2. Coaching Youth Basketball by Kristen Somogyi- This book give a detailed explanation on what I have to do in if I plan to coach basketball.
3. Let's Talk Defense-Herb Brown- This book talked about the important personalities I have to look for in order to be successful. It showed me all kinds of things such as plays and what to look for in a player.

Product: Before, I can't stand teaching kids and even my sister, but when I went through this experience, I learned to be patient and have the heart to help and teach kids and most importantly about basketball. As a product, I have been offered by Mr. Cammon the head coach and P.E. teacher of Fremont Academy to coach his team along with his assistant coach Valentine. This is my product because I am actually going to consider this offer and I love being part of the team and I want to be a part of watching and helping this team grow.

Independent Study 2

1. Log- Chino Valley Calvary Chapel Church League- 3/26, 4/2, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23 all 6-8 pm. PacRim league 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6 ,2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20 all 1-3 pm.

2. The 1st and 2nd pictures are from the adult league that I joined with Riley, Jimmy, Mikey, Muhammad and a couple of guys from outside of school. The league is called PacRim Sports.
The 3rd and 4th pictures are from the church league I'm playing in right now.

 3. Complete the LIA:

Literal

(a) "I, Jeremiah Teves, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work."

(b) I played in these two leagues. Basically, what I wanted to do was apply what I learned from coaching basketball into my game.

Interpretive

I applied the skills that I learned while coaching, plays, and fundamentals. I also helped set up plays and drills that we could use for both of these teams. I'm happy to say that I've improved my game a lot because of what I have observed in my service learning. I learned that keeping in mind basic fundamentals in basketball is very important and that I not only have to play the game but also to study it. And because I have, I can see that my game has changed for the better from a few months ago.

Applied

These two things that I did for independent component 2 were really important to me. By applying what I learned from service learning, instead of gaining respect, I changed my answer to my EQ to disciplining the players. While playing in these two leagues, I learned to establish discipline. I learned to really pick my spots when shooting, know when to pass and when to not, to hustle, and basically learned the fundamentals of basketball. Because of my independent component 2, it showed me that without discipline, a team would not be a team because everybody would be playing separately. Without it, a player can't get better. If a team lacks discipline, how can they execute the play that their coach tells them to? They won't be able to because they're not playing as one. Also, scouting the other team and finding their weakness would be useless if you're team can't adjust to a different play compared to what they're used to because they lack discipline.

Independent Study 2 Approval

1.) I still plan on doing the same thing which is to coach a team for my independent study. Riley and I set up a team called the Bromosapiens and we play for a league called PacRim Sports. The only difference between this and the Fremont team I coached is that I'm also going to be playing and its an adult league but my focus is still on  coaching the team.

2.) This relates to my EQ because it still helps me get a better view for my answers and this gives me more experience in coaching. I believe that me being able to play also will be good for me because I believe it will give me a better look and understanding into what needs to be done on the court.

Independent Study 1

1. 12-2 pm
I'm sure this is more than 30 hours.

2.

3. Literal
a.) I, Jeremiah Teves, affirm that I have completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
b.) I have completed a whole season of basketball with these kids. Season started at January 8 and ended at March 1. I have helped coach the kids and train them for more than a month and a half and have assisted the other coaches during the 5 games they played in a span of 3 weeks.

Interpretive
There are a lot of significant parts in my component. It has helped me get a better view of my essential question and my three answers. This independent component demonstrates more than 30 hours of work. In this independent component, I am constantly standing up, observing drills and plays, guiding the kids, helping the coaches, and I even coached a couple of the games for quite some time.

Applied
This independent component has helped me really see and define the answers for my EQ. My answers are countering with the right play, earning the team's respect, and constantly scouting the other team. Through this independent study, I have seen my answers constantly being shown during practice and during games. This study has shed some light and have helped me define these answers as to why they are important in becoming a successful basketball coach.
