Independent Study Update

1) What have you chosen to do as your first independent study?
What I have chosen to do as my first independent study is to try to set up a team to play for a league with Riley.
2) How does this task relate to your essential question?
This task relates to my essential question because when we set up the team, I will be coaching it putting in the skills I learned from watching other coaches.
3) What tasks associated with your first independent study have you accomplished so far?
Well, me and Riley have found a league so now we just have to set up a team name and find some more players that are dedicated to play and practice.

What I've learned So Far

For my senior project, I have asked a couple of kids that play basketball at the park almost everyday if they would like me to try to teach them some of the things I know to try to help them improve their game and they agreed. So far, what I have learned is that working with kids take patience.  It gets frustrating at times because I have to constantly try to get them to focus but it does put a smile on my face seeing the kids have fun and its a rewarding feeling. I've also learned how to establish a big brother relationship with them and I believe that it plays a big role in them listening to me and giving me the respect that I need.

Interview 1 Reflection

What is the most important thing I learned from the interview and why?

I learned a lot of things from my interview with my dad. I learned that even though that coaching is a fun job to do, now I know that it is very challenging.  Coaching is not just about plays and making better players. Coaching is about being there for your team and encouraging them to push forward.  It involves a lot of communication.  I also learned that there are a lot of things I can do that my dad did when he was younger to gain a better knowledge in basketball.

5 Minute Presentation Reflection

What would you say stood out about your presentation performance and what was most challenging to do and why?

What I think stood out in my presentation performance was when I talked about the forward position in basketball. I think the most challenging thing I did in this first presentation is finding the topic to talk about.  I needed to find a topic that I wouldn't talk about in my 2 hour presentation and this made it challenging for me.

5 Minute Presentation

Objective: Students will learn about the forward position in basketball and learn about one historical figure in coaching.

Procedure: Step 1: I will introduce myself and my NEW topic!!:D
Step 2: Then I will start off with explaining what the forward position is in basketball and what they do.
Step 3: Then I will show my fellow students a poster that made about a specific type of play in basketball.
Step 4: After, I will talk about one historical coach in basketball, Red Auerbach.
Step 5: Then I will ask the students about the forward position and Red Auerbach.

Check for understanding: I plan to make sure that the audience members understand what I'm teaching by asking them questions about the forward position and Red Auerbach.

Topic Choice

What is your topic?
My topic is about coaching basketball.

Why did you choose this topic?
I chose this topic because basketball is a sport that I have always loved. On a playing level, I can say that I'm pretty decent which is why I didn't choose my project to be on player development.  I wanted to do something about basketball that would help somebody and myself and that's where I thought about coaching.

What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?
What I hope to accomplish is to help coach a team of some sort. Like a  kid's basketball team and help them get a championship or be on top of the rankings. I also hope to gain a better understanding in the game of basketball and to learn the fundamentals and plays that are needed in basketball to win and succeed.

Interview Check

Who are you interviewing and why?
I'm going to interview my Pops. I am interviewing him because I know he has enough experience in coaching basketball.  He is the person that taught me what I needed to learn and what area to improve on.

What other questions do you want to ask at your interview?
Some is of the questions I would like to ask is: How did you become interested in basketball? What did you do to improve as a basketball player?
